I’ve done this post in what I’ll be referring to as my “magazine” format. Not sure if there is any benefit to readers or to myself as far as creating the articles, but I do like the full control of the code as opposed to working within the page constraints of the blog.

Here’s the Clix article.

Comments welcome. Even negative ones.

When I first saw the name “Dude Girl“, I wasn’t sure what to make of it. So when I stopped to have a chat with Kim, the owner, I was pleasantly surprised to learn the origin of her clothing company’s name. Seems her grandmother was a cowgirl with a taste for adventure. (If you click the link and read the story, you’ll truly appreciate what an understatement that is.)

Turns out that Kim is a long-time cyclist who decided to escape from the cubicle to pursue a little adventure herself.  What started out as a travel company for adventure cyclists grew to include apparel, which is where things get good for the rest of us.

The line comprises clothing for yoga, cycling, running, and casual sport. “Purposeful comfort” is what I was thinking when I had a look at what was on display. I also couldn’t help but notice the extensive use of bamboo and organic cotton. It’s a bold statement, when a company is willing to accept a lower margin to do the right thing.  And it’s not just for girls - they have some cool stuff for guys and kids too. Being the owner of a dog that frequently “stretches like a ballerina”, I could almost see myself wearing a shirt with a cartoon dog doing yoga. Almost.

Since my goal is to showcase companies that are run by people as passionate about our sport as they are about the environment, I can’t urge you enough to give them a look. Quality products from cyclists, what more could you ask for?

Ok, first off, Gyrobike is not a bike for drunks. Sure, it can help keep a bike as upright and steady at 2 MPH as though it was traveling at 10 MPH. Yes, it can assist riders that have issues with balance and coordination. And so what if it was invented by three engineering students at Dartmouth? It is not a bike for intoxicated adults. I’m being serious here. As serious as a purple beard!

So now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, a bit about this clever invention. By placing a battery-powered gyroscope in the front wheel of a bicycle, the very smart folks at Gyrobike have created a product that makes it much easier for a beginner cyclist of almost any age to get upright and stay upright. Not only does it have the potential to get more people on a bicycle, it looks way cooler (a marketing term for better) than training wheels, or a dad running behind the bike.  But dads, do not be alarmed. This technology cannot take out the trash, parallel park, or make babies. So our place is safe. For now anyway.

Here is a link to one of their test videos on youtube. I was going to embed it, but that kind of fancy coding escapes me. You can also do a search yourself.

Look for an interview with Daniella, their (psst! smokin’ hot) CEO soon. Well, as soon as I can think up 10 really good questions to ask about the product and the company that have not already been answered on their website.

So at Interbike, I saw a ton of new little goodies, gadgets and gear. Some were boring, some were fascinating, some were downright stupid. And then there were the ridiculously simple things, where I stood there wondering “Why has no one come up with this before?”

Case in point - StemCaptain:

It replaces the stem cap with a clock, compass, altimeter, or even just a little round photo frame for a picture of your dog. And of course, they come in several colors. It’s not going to make anyone faster, smarter, or better looking, but it’s still a nice bit of bling.

I’m holding out for a titanium one with a carbon fiber face. OK, maybe not. But check them out. I’m willing to bet that they’re going to end up in a few stockings this Christmas.
