Finally, something truly newsworthy. Internet Brands, which is the parent company of CarsDirect.com and other community based sites including Wikitravel.org, FlyerTalk.com, SlowTalk.com and others, has added BikeForums.net to its portfolio of websites.

The site was started about 7 and a half years ago, by Joe Gardner. Over the years, Joe has watched the site grow from 3 registered members in the first week to over 65,000 registered members today. It’s gone from 2 - 3 posts a day to over 6,000 new posts daily. This site has far exceeded all expectations he had that first week! Joe will still be posting on the forums, but he is using the proceeds from the sale to pursue other cycling-related projects. After putting in more than 7 years of hard work on the site, he’s ready to move on to something else. More on that when he’s ready to go live.

The good news for members is that there will be no change in the day to day running of the site, from a participant’s view. The same moderator team will be in place, and we also gain a full time IT, advertising, marketing and bookkeeping staff. This benefits not only the members, but our advertisers as well.

In the meantime, stop in and have a look. It costs nothing to register, and you get to join a diverse cycling community with 65,000+ other members, all sharing the same passion for cycling in one form or another.

I just checked my Google AdSense stats. For this month, I have averaged 63 cents a day. So I’m getting paid to write this stuff. I shall try not to let it go to my head. If I make just a bit more, I can put a deposit down on that Ellsworth The Ride that I’ve had my eye on since I did the interview with Tony.

Man, I can’t let the fame and fortune go to my head!

Well, I got nothing. I refuse to write about doping scandals, Don Imus, or Paris Hilton. And when I do a search of the latest bike-related news, I find that it’s been covered on a bunch of other sites already. None of my usual sources have anything good to share either. So I got nothing.

But tune in Wednesday, I know I’ll have something exclusive then.

That would be so terrible.

John Schwartz is the general manager of a gas station in Mequon, Wisconsin. The owner of the station, Harvey Pollack, decided not to sell gas for a day, as a way to protest the high prices. He figured shutting down his pumps for 24 hours might convince others to join his movement, with the goal of getting oil companies to lower their prices. This from the man that bought a gas station as an investment?

John, buy your kids some bikes. They’re the best choice for short trips. If they need a car, get them something economical and environmentally friendly. Think Civic, not SUV.

Harvey, do you really think that the oil companies will lower their prices, so you can make a profit? I must have missed the part where you said you would pass the savings on to motorists. Because if you did, they could afford bigger cars…

I can remember when CNN was actually about real news.

It makes me happy to post press releases like this one:

ZOIC Clothing, the cycling and outdoor clothing manufacturer, announced today it has sponsored Biking for a Better World, Inc. through outfitting a four man bicycling team pedaling from Purdue Bay, Alaska to Ushuaia, Argentina. Beginning on June 15th, 2007, this team will begin their 16,000 mile journey, riding unsupported, towing trailers with their gear. Their goal is to positively affect the communities that will become their hosts along their route.

Jake Spero, President of Biking for a Better World said, “The team is using the tour to raise funds and awareness to help build a school in Nicaragua in the summer of 2007. We have raised $15,000 towards our $25,000 goal. This fundraising endeavor is the first of our newly-formed Lake Tahoe based non profit organization, Biking for a Better World, Inc.”

“Biking for a Better World and their passions on and off the bike, is a perfect fit for the philanthropic efforts of ZOIC Clothing, and is exactly the type of opportunity we cherish to be part of”, said Eric Swenson from ZOIC. “We need to raise awareness for their work, outfitting them is the easy part.”

Please visit www.bikingforabetterworld.org to track the progress of the group and/or donate to the cause.”
